MCC Alumnus Named Manatee Schools Employee of the Year
Manatee Community College (MCC) alumnus Tomas Carrillo Jr., 23, was named Employee of the Year by the Manatee County School Board at a Feb. 4 luncheon. Selected from among approximately 60 nominees and five finalists for the prestigious award, Carrillo won a $200 bonus. Carrillo is a migrant liaison at McNeal Elementary School. Award presenters lauded him as a "model of professionalism with a heart."
Originally from Mexico, Carrillo came with his family to America at age 6. He participated in MCC's Summer Bridge Program, which provides tutoring and other assistance to help at-risk high school seniors transition into college, and was the first in his family to attend college.
Carrillo worked as a student assistant at MCC and served as a Student Ambassador before graduating in Spring 2005 with an associate in science degree in criminal justice. He was the winner of a $2,500 Beverly Beall and R. Kemp Riechmann Foundation scholarship award.
