Spring Commencement to be Held May 2

(Bradenton, Fla., April 22, 2008) - Manatee Community College (MCC) Spring 2008 commencement exercises will be held at 7 p.m., Friday, May 2, in the Manatee Convention Center, Palmetto. Out of a total of 620 students eligible for graduation, approximately 271 are expected to participate in the ceremony. 

The guest speaker is MCC President Dr. Sarah Pappas, who will be retiring June 30 after 11 years at MCC and 40 years in higher education. She has overseen dramatic growth in enrollment and college facilities at MCC. During her tenure, the college also received the highest possible 10-year accreditation rating from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Bradenton resident Kelly "Kaje" Housman is the student speaker. Vice president of the MCC chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society and a member of an award-winning Brain Bowl team, Housman earned an associate in arts degree. She plans to attend the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee to pursue a bachelor's degree in professional and technical writing. 

Other program participants include Steve Harner, chair, MCC District Board of Trustees; Dr. John Rosen, vice president, academic affairs; Stephanie Cook, assistant professor, computing and engineering technology; Jennifer Quick, instructor, language and literature; Luci Frith, professor, speech, mace bearer; MCC Bradenton Student Government Association (SGA) President Justin Zinkovich; MCC Venice SGA President Kathleen Emmons; Rev. Don Nicholson, chaplain, Campus Ministries; and music student Danielle Hollobaugh.               .
