Pappas Professional Development Center Dedicated at SCF Venice
(Bradenton, Fla., October 21, 2009) - State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) President Dr. Lars A. Hafner and the SCF District Board of Trustees dedicated the Sarah H. Pappas Professional Development Center (PDC) at SCF Venice in honor of the College's former president, noting her accomplishments and service at a ceremony on Oct. 21.
Prior to her retirement in 2008, the board unanimously voted to rename the center in Pappas' honor, effective 2009, and conferred upon Pappas the title of President Emeritus.
The PDC is a campus focal point that features regular and distance learning classrooms, a state-of-the-art nursing laboratory and the multipurpose William G. and Marie Selby Room used for college and community activities.
Hafner thanked Pappas on behalf of the college family and community for her leadership and community service.
SCF Board Chairman Steve Harner read a resolution honoring Pappas, highlighting her accomplishments in her 11 years of service as College president.
Pappas thanked legislators and the SCF Foundation for rising to the challenge of funding the remodeling of the little used former gymnasium into a modern two-story, multi-use classroom building that made it possible to bring a full nursing program to the Venice campus.
"This College and this campus have always had support from the community," Pappas said. "When a college meets the needs of a region and exceeds expectations, in return you receive fierce loyalty to the College. This campus and College are examples of that."
Guests included SCF Trustees, SCF Foundation board members and elected officials including Sarasota County Tax Collector Barbara Ford-Coates, state Sen. Nancy Detert and former Sen. Bob Johnson, who was credited for his role in the Legislature in establishing the Venice campus.
