(07-27-2017) SCF, Manatee-Sarasota to Offer Online GED Prep Classes
State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) will offer 6-week online courses to help students prepare for taking the exam to earn a General Education Diploma (GED). Each course costs $100, is self-paced and includes 24 hours of instruction. The courses will be offered monthly beginning Aug. 16.
GED preparation covers the basics to succeed on the GED test's four modules: mathematical reasoning; reasoning through language arts; science; and social studies. Before taking the general preparation course, students should be able to do basic math operations, such as fractions and decimals, without a calculator.
(07-27-2017) SCF, Manatee-Sarasota to Offer Enrolled Agent Course, Exams
State College of Florida, Manatee Sarasota (SCF) will offer an enrolled agent course for tax preparers. Classes begin in August at SCF Lakewood Ranch, 7131 Professional Parkway East. The course costs $1,100 and includes materials.
Enrolled agent status is the highest credential the IRS awards. Enrolled agents, like attorneys and certified public accountants (CPAs), have broad practice rights. The course is designed to help students pass a rigorous three-part exam to earn the designation. The exam tests students in all aspects of taxation. Classes, which are held 6-9 p.m., are broken up into three sections that correlate with the test. An online orientation will be offered Aug. 15.
(07-25-2017) PTA Program Director at SCF on National Task Force
Matthew Connell, the director of the Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) program at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF), was one of 18 members of a task force charged with reviewing the National Physical Therapy Exam for PTAs.
The Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT) creates, administers and scores the national exam. All physical therapists and physical therapy assistants must pass the exam to be licensed. The FSBPT task force, made up of physical therapists and physical therapy assistants, reassesses the exam every five years to evaluate whether it needs to be updated to cover any new content, practice or educational trends to ensure that everyone who passes the exam is qualified to be licensed.
(07-25-2017) SCF, Manatee-Sarasota to Host "Welcome Back Bash"
State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) will host a "Welcome Back Bash" featuring music, food, giveaways and campus tours.
The events, which are open to the public, will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Aug. 14 at SCF Venice, 8000 S. Tamiami Trail, Buildings 100 and 500; and 4 to 6 p.m. Aug. 15 at SCF Bradenton, 5840 26th St. W. Attendees will have a chance to win free or discounted books and tuition waivers. This also will be an opportunity for students to buy books and supplies, and get their IDs and parking passes.

(07-20-2017) Former SCF Coach Tim Hill Sr. to be Inducted Into ABCA Hall of Fame
Tim Hill Sr., a former baseball coach at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF), will be inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Hall of Fame in January. Hill, who led the SCF Manatees for 31 seasons, was one of the winningest junior college coaches of all time. For his career, he amassed a record of 1193-550-3 (.683) and ranked sixth all-time in wins among junior college coaches as of 2016.
Hill, who passed away in 2015, came to SCF (then Manatee Junior College) in 1978 as an assistant coach to Robert C. Wynn, another ABCA Hall of Famer. Under Hill, the baseball team, formerly called the Lancers, captured 17 conference titles, six state titles, made five trips to the Alpine Bank JUCO World Series and managed three top-three national tournament finishes.
(07-20-2017) Dean of Nursing and Health Professions at SCF Publishes Research on Rural Health
The Dean of Nursing and Health Professions at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) has published a peer-reviewed journal article on her research into telehealth-based care for patients in rural areas. Roseanne Fairchild, who has a Ph.D. in Health Systems Research and Leadership, along with colleagues and healthcare provider staff, published "Perceptions of Rural Emergency Department Providers Regarding Telehealth-Based Care: Perceived Competency, Satisfaction with Care and Tele-ED Patient Disposition."
The research, published in the Open Journal of Nursing and supported by a Health Services Resource Administration Telehealth Network grant, revealed: • Degree programs for health professions students should include experiences with telehealth-based care delivery to improve competencies in telehealth, • telehealth supports improved diagnostic decision-making based on reports from the attending providers (physicians), and • the majority of patients who have experienced a telehealth visit would recommend it to others.
(07-18-2017) Europe Helps History Come Alive for SCF's Study Abroad Program
Students from State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) discovered there's no place like Western Europe to make history come alive. A group of eight students and two faculty members from SCF Venice headed to London, Paris, Florence and Rome to study European history as part of SCF's summer semester study abroad program.
Students visited The Houses of Parliament and Buckingham Palace, Notre Dame, the Louvre, the Basilica of Santa Croce, Vatican City, the Sistine Chapel and the Pantheon. Students in the Special Topics in Western Civilization class were required to keep journals of their 10-day trip documenting what they were learning and after returning were required to write a paper and do a class presentation.
(07-18-2017) SCF Director of Nursing Presents Research at Oxford University
Jean Davis, the Bachelor of Science Nursing Program Director for State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF), presented research this week during the 2017 International Movement: Brain, Body and Cognition Conference at The University of Oxford in England.
Her pilot research study, presented July 10 and titled "Physical Activity Habit Formation Through a 10,000 Steps Program," is designed to tailor health and wellness activities based on cultural preferences. Davis is dedicated to working with transcultural populations, including students, health care providers, patients and families, to help them build better exercise habits. The nursing students in the BSN program also benefit from her efforts to emphasize the importance of transcultural awareness.
(07-13-2017) New Dean of Nursing and Health Professions Joins SCF
State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) has hired a new dean of nursing and health professions with experience in research, community outreach and corporate partnerships. Roseanne Fairchild joined SCF June 19 from Indiana State University, where she was the director of the doctor of nursing practice.
Fairchild was interested in coming to SCF because of the nursing school's reputation and student performance. She cited the student-centered learning and community engagement. She wants to keep the focus on students while finding ways to provide even more opportunities for them.
