English for College and Communication

From beginners to advanced learners, our goal is to help you learn the English speaking, reading, and writing skills you need for success

What is English for College and Communication (EFCC)?

This is an intensive program for beginner and high-beginner English language learners that helps them reach the level of English needed to be accepted as a student at State College of Florida (SCF). The program is especially designed for those who plan to eventually attend college at SCF. However, you may also participate in the program if you simply want to improve your English comprehension and communication skills. This is a rigorous program and will require your best effort. This is an academic skills class with homework, tests, and required attendance.

What is required to enroll?

The only requirement for this class is U.S. residency. However, you may be eligible to take the class if you have a tourist visa that covers the duration of the class.

This program is not for F-1 international students and does not issue student visas. If you are an F-1 international student seeking a student visa to attend college, contact International@SCF.edu.

If you already have a student visa and have attended school in the United States, it may be possible to study in the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program.

If you transition to the EAP program, you will need a high school diploma from any country. If you have not had your diploma translated and evaluated, you will be required to do this. Don’t worry; we will give you information on how to do this.

When are the classes?

Classes are generally offered a few times each year and meet Monday through Thursday for 12 weeks. Usual class hours are 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon. For schedules and registration, please visit SCF.edu/Training or contact our office at 941-363-7150.

What is the difference between English for College and Communication (EFCC) and English for Academic Purposes (EAP)?

English for College and Communication (EFCC) is not a college credit class. It is for individuals who want to attend college but don’t have the necessary English skills or for those who want to improve their professional language skills. This is a program for beginner and high-beginner English learners. When you finish this course, you may be at a high enough level to attend SCF’s EAP program if you choose to learn more English at an intermediate and then advanced level.

English for Academic Purposes (EAP) has courses for intermediate and advanced English learners. This is a college program and students must apply to the College to take these courses. Students who take these courses may also qualify to receive financial aid.

Both programs prepare students to complete college and/or university in the United States.

What is the content of English for College and Communication (EFCC)?

Each week, you will receive 12 hours of English instruction in speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar. All instruction is in a classroom with a teacher who is focused on your success. You will build your general English skills so you can succeed in SCF college credit courses.

This is a challenging, academic program. You will be expected to complete homework, study, attend and participate regularly in the class, and take tests.

You will be provided with learning materials. You should have access to a computer and Internet connection at home so you can do homework online. If you don’t have a computer at home, your teacher will explain where you can use a computer on campus.

In addition, you’ll be given help to make a smooth transition from the English for College and Communication (EFCC) program to the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program at the College. When you are ready, you will meet with admissions staff and advisors who will help you apply to SCF and explain what you need to do to continue your academic career. The goal is to help you move into college courses at SCF.

How much does this program cost?

The cost of the 12-week program is $750. The cost includes tuition, books, and online learning support.   Payment is due at the time of registration. No refunds are provided unless the course is canceled. After completing English for College and Communication (EFCC), students who register for the EAP program at SCF will have $250 of their $750 tuition refunded to them as a bonus!

These programs are not for F-1 International Students. Visit our International Students page for more F-1 International student information.
