Publishing 101: To Subsidy or Self Publish

Learn how to publish your own work as a print on demand "tree-book" or a digital e-book.  The course covers understanding the publication process and making the right choice for your book.  It will also cover how to prepare your book for publication (formatting & editing),  how to choose the best choice for services you might need prior to uploading(digitizing, formatting, cover designs) and how to market your book both before and after publication.  Class fee includes the book “Published! The Complete Guide to Nontraditional Publishing.” 

The Short Story and It's Writer

Learn how conflict drives your story, how to create memorable characters, write realistic dialogue and build a scene. Bring a notebook, pen, your story ideas or story-in-progress. We'll do a writing exercise.

Write a Children's Chapter Book

Do you have a story to tell a child? Learn the elements of story, how to map and pace each chapter, how to submit your finished book for publication and more.

Writers Workshop

Bring whatever you’re working on—a novel, short story, magazine article, memoir, screenplay, poetry, children’s story, etc. You’ll have the opportunity to read and receive feedback on your work. 

Writing Your Memoirs

Published writer and editor Diane Robertson will help students uncover the through line and theturning pointsin their lives, how to show rather than tell the story, and how to write realistic dialogue.Students also willlearn how to frame stories for journals, family chronicles or memoirs. Students should bring a notebook and pen to each session as there will be weekly writing exercises and hopefully, by session five, students will have a good start on their memoirs.

General Knowledge Test (GKT) Preparation

This class prepares students to take Florida’s FTCE General Knowledge Test (FTCE-GKT), which is part of the Florida Teacher Certification Examinations (FTCE). Students acquire a thorough and accurate understanding of what it takes to master the FTCE-GKT by working through the general knowledge book and our exclusive TESTware on the provided CD. The comprehensive review material in this book covers all subject areas known to appear on the FTCE-GKT, providing students with all the information needed to successfully take this challenging certification exam.

English for College

Learn English at State College of Florida and get on the road to a college degree. From beginning to advanced levels, the English language learning program helps students learn the speaking, writing, reading and academic skills needed to succeed in college for a two-year degree and beyond. Need to Learn English in order to attend college?

This is an intensive, non-college-credit program for beginners. Classes meet 12 hours a week for 12 weeks and teach English communication skills for success in college. At the end of this program, many students are able to register at State College of Florida to continue their studies in the EAP program. In the English for College program, students also learn about degrees and certificates that SCF offers and meet with advisors to help plan future studies. Students in this program must have a high school diploma from any country.
