Title III, EAP 0140 Student Resources

F A Q s:  Writing I

What are the objectives of this course?

Upon completion of EAP 0140 Writing I, you should be able to write short paragraphs on personal topics with few basic errors.

Are there any special exams that I must take to succeed in this course?

Yes.  In addition to earning a grade of C or higher in the course, you will need to take the departmental exit exam and pass with at least a 70%.

Are there any eligibility requirements for taking the exam?

Yes.  You must have at least a 70% average in the course in order to take the departmental exit exam.

What is the exit exam?

You will be asked to write a paragraph with a minimum of five simples sentences.  In order to pass the exam, your paragraph must contain a topic sentence, a concluding sentence, and show some type of organization of ideas.  The paragraph cannot have more than two errors of missing subject and/or verb in simple sentences and no more than one error in basic word order.

Is the exam timed?

Yes.  You must complete the exam during the allotted class time.

How do I prepare for the exit exam?

Your final exam will be the same as your other class writings.  Therefore, if you attend class regularly, always do your homework, revise your papers, and take your writing seriously, you should be well prepared for the departmental exit exam.

When do I take the exam?

The exam is usually given during the last week of class.  Your instructor will give you the specific day and date.

When will I receive my exam results?

You should receive the results of your exam at the next scheduled class period.

What if my exam did not pass?

If your exam paragraph did not receive a passing score, you will be given a different form of the exam.  You are allowed only one opportunity to re-take the exam.  If you pass the "second chance" exam, you will pass the course.
