Tips for Creating A Concise Resume or . . . .

"Your Resume Is Not an Autobiography"
By Kim Isaacs at Monster.com

Eight Tips to a Concise Resume:

Avoid Repeating Information - if you did the same tasks in many jobs, focus on the accomplishments rather than the tasks

  1. Eliminate Old Experience - if you have a long career history, only go back 10-15 years
  2. Don't include Irrelevant Information - avoid hobbies, DOB, marital status, and old skills
  3. Cut Down on Job Duties - create a paragraph the gives scope of responsibility
  4. Remove "References Available Upon Request" - today it's an obvious thing
  5. Use a Telegraphic Writing Style - eliminate personal pronouns and minimize the use of articles when preparing a resume
  6. Edit Unnecessary Words - review you resume and eliminate phrases like "responsible for" and "duties include."
  7. Customize Your Resume for Your Job Target - Only include information relevant to your goal.  This is particularly important for career changers who need to focus on transferable skills and de-emphasize unrelated career accomplishments

Just graduating or less than 5 years experience requires a one-page resume

The Skim Test - See if your resume passes the skim test

  • Can a hiring manager see your main credentials within 10-15 seconds?
  • Does critical information jump off the page?
  • Do I effectively sell myself on the top quarter of the first page?

The Sales Pitch - Selling points must be prominently displayed at the top of the first page

  • If an MBA is required, don't bury education far into the body of the resume
  • You can showcase key qualifications in a Career Summary Objective statement at the top of the first page

Use and Editor's Eye

  • Resumes should not include every detail only info that would help you get the interview
  • Don't hold on to the past for emotional reasons
