When Do I Apply?

Apply after you have registered for your last semester. You are not required to wait until the end of your last semester to apply. For example, if you are planning on graduating in the Spring semester, you should apply  after you register for your courses in late October/early November.

All summer graduates are invited to participate in the winter ceremony in December, since there is not a  summer commencement ceremony.

Priority Deadline - When you submit your application on or before the published semester priority deadline, you are guaranteed the following perks: 1. your name printed in the Commencement Ceremony program, 2. Outstanding Graduate Award (OGA) consideration, and 3. the maximum number of Commencement Ceremony guest tickets with a successful online RSVP by the deadline 

Hard/Final Deadline - In order to apply for the semester you're graduating in, you must submit your application by the published semester hard deadline. Applications received after this date will be considered for the next available graduation application cycle.  

 How Do I Apply to Earn My Degree or Certificate? | Graduation Application Checklist

  1. Complete the online graduation application in its entirety. You will receive a confirmation that the application has been submitted. In the MySCF portal, you may view you application. Once, you complete the application, a $20 fee will be applied to your account. (Reapplications and certificates will not be charged this fee).
  2. Pay the $20 graduation fee to Cashiering in person or over the phone by calling 941-752-5370 within 24 hours after you have submitted your online application. Reapplications and certificates do not have a fee.
  3. Submit the online pre-grad survey. NOTE: This survey is currently offline due to an upgrade. This will not interfere with the graduation process. Please submit all paperwork at this time and do not wait for the survey. We will email you a link later to complete at your convenience.

What If My Plans Change or I Need to Apply for a Different Semester? 

Please notify your advisor and our graduation specialist as soon as you know. We may be able to shift your application to the following semester without you having to re-apply.

Graduation Ceremony Attendance Policy

Only students who successfully complete the following, by all posted deadlines, may participate in the graduation ceremony:

  1. Submit the online graduation application and take the graduation survey
  2. Pay the $20 graduation fee (*reapplications and certificates do not have a fee)
  3. RSVP to the ceremony
  4. Have a student status of degree seeking
  5. Receive an initial approval email from Educational Records during the first review
  6. Purchase the correct graduation regalia from the SCF Store

Initial approval will be determined in the first round of the review process, and students will be informed that they are initially approved or are missing requirements to graduate via their SCF student email accounts. Students who are missing any requirements will not be permitted to walk in the graduation ceremony.

Students who are missing requirements must register to fulfill the course requirements in the graduation semester and/or correct the issues, and email to notify Educational Records that they are ready to be reviewed and considered for initial approval again.

Students graduating in the spring semester are invited to the spring graduation ceremony. Students graduating in either the summer session or the fall semester are invited to the winter graduation ceremony.

Only students who meet the priority deadline are guaranteed the maximum number of tickets and his/her name in the graduation ceremony program.

An exception is made for Dual Enrollment students, who will be completing all the required coursework in the graduation term. These students will often not receive final high school transcripts until after the SCF graduation date. Since receipt of a high school transcript is a state requirement for graduation, we will review the application for degree conferral in the next available cycle, but the student can walk in the designated graduation term one semester prior to receiving the degree.

Winter 2018 Graduation Ceremony Information

  • Please leave enough time for travel and traffic congestion to ensure an on-time arrival. 
  • US 301 and State Road 64 are the best exit options off of 1-75 to the Convention Center.

Guest Tickets and Graduation Ceremony RSVP

The number of tickets available will be based on the information collected in the online RSVP link for graduation. 

Regalia and Dress Code

  • Graduates are required to wear New Navy-Shiny finish regalia (cap, gown, and tassel) purchased from the SCF Store at SCF Bradenton or SCF Venice.
  • Regalia may be pre-ordered by TBD. Select State College of Florida, your campus, and degree. Pre-orders will be at the SCF Store for pick-up.
  • Regalia will also be available for purchase in the SCF Store (approximately two weeks prior to graduation). Please call 941-752-5080 with questions.
  • Students will NOT be able to participate in the ceremony wearing the matte cap and gown that was used prior to Spring 2015. We caution you against purchasing gowns from other locations or borrowing from past graduates.
  • Men Dress Code: white dress shirts, neckties, dark shoes, and dark trousers under their gowns.
  • Women Dress Code: dark shoes and dark dress or slacks under their gowns.
  • All tassels should be worn on the right side.

Phi Theta Kappa and Honors 

Phi Theta Kappa members may go to to purchase an optional honor cord, stole, and tassel. There is no added regalia for honors.


If you are a Veteran of the United States Armed Forces and you are planning to participate in the graduation ceremony, SCF would like to honor your service with patriotic cords to be worn as part of your official graduation regalia. Please contact Veteran Services  to confirm your intent to participate in the ceremony. If you are not currently using a VA Educational Benefit, you will be required to provide a copy of your military separation paperwork (DD214) or a valid Veteran ID card to the office of Veteran Services.  We can also be reached at (941) 752-5075.

Ceremony Graduate Procedures and Policies 

  • Graduates must arrive by 5:45 p.m.
  • Park in the main parking lot and enter through the main lobby entrance.
  • Pick up your ceremony card at the graduate check-in tables.
  • Confirm your name and address are correct on your ceremony card. It is recommended that you speak to the graduation reader if your name is difficult to pronounce.
  • You may not carry anything with you other than the ceremony card you are given.
  • Please turn off cell phones before the ceremony begins.
  • Remain in check-in area with your cap, gown, and tassel.
  • You will line up according to degree (not in alphabetical order or by major).
  • Final processional line-up begins promptly at 6:45 p.m.
  • Processional into the auditorium to assigned seating begins promptly at 7:00 p.m.
  • Graduates are expected to stay until the end of the ceremony, which will last approximately two hours.
  • Men are expected to remove their caps for the National Anthem.

Graduate Announcement, Crossing the Stage, and Honors Designation

  • Graduate marshalls will signal each row to stand and proceed to the front-left of the stage.
  • Graduates will hand their ceremony card to the reader who will announce the graduate.
  • When your name is read, walk directly toward the center of the stage.
  • Proceed across the stage to receive the diploma cover from SCF President Dr. Probstfeld, and a professional photographer will take your picture.

Graduates who submit their application by the posted priority deadline will have their names, degree(s) or certificate(s), and honors listed in the commencement program.

For spring graduates: Honors designation for commencement for spring degree candidates is based on the last term completed prior to the spring term. The final grade point average after spring grades are posted will be used to determine honors recognition for the official transcript and diploma.

For summer graduates: Honors designation for commencement and for determining honors on the official transcript and diploma for summer degree candidates is based on grade point average after summer grades are posted.

Guest Information

  • Please park in the main parking lot and enter through the main lobby entrance.
  • All guests, including infants and children, must have a ticket for entrance into the auditorium.
  • Reserved seating is only for graduates.
  • Doors open at 6:00 p.m., and guests will need to be seated by 6:45 p.m. The doors will be closed to guests promptly at 6:50 p.m. for the processional.
  • Late-arriving guests will be seated after the processional of graduates.
  • The following items are not permitted in the hall:
    • Food and/or drinks (including water)
    • Strollers
    • Balloons
    • Air horns
    • Beach balls (and similar items)
  • At the close of the ceremony, guests should remain in their seats until the platform party, faculty, and all graduates have recessed. After the ceremony, guests should meet with the graduates outside of the facility.

Disability Resource Center for Graduates and Guests

  • Graduates with special needs will be accommodated. Please contact the Disability Resource Center at least two weeks in advance of the ceremony at (941) 752-5295 or
  • All graduation ceremonies will have an American Sign Language interpreter in attendance.
  • There is no pre-assigned seating for guests with disabilities. However, limited wheelchair seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Guests should arrive at 6:00 p.m.


  • SCF's Office of Communications and Marketing has arranged for professional photographs to be taken of each graduate. Two photos will be taken: one while receiving the diploma cover from the College president and the other after exiting the stage.
  • The ceremony will be videotaped and available for viewing at a later date on the SCF graduation Web page.
  • Personal cameras and camcorders may be used only from attendees' seats.

Diploma Mailings

After the College has certified the degrees and certificates, diplomas and certificates will be mailed to the address listed on your application for graduation. Please allow up to eight weeks for certification and shipping.

Summer Graduates 

SCF does not hold a summer graduation ceremony, but all summer graduates are invited to participate in the winter ceremony.

Important Information for After Graduation

Program and Major Change Deadlines | Continuing Students

If you are continuing your studies toward another degree at SCF you must change your program for the next semester by the deadline published in the academic calendar. Since you are graduating in your current program the college will change you to non-degree seeking, unless you request a program change. Be aware this may affect your financial aid eligibility.

Financial Aid

If you have received federal student loans during your tenure at SCF, you must complete exit counseling.

FAQ | Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need to apply for graduation even if I will not be walking in the ceremony? 

  • A: Yes. You must successfully submit all steps of the graduation application to be considered for a degree or certificate. If you will not be walking, please RSVP on the attendance email, sent later in the semester, that you will not be attending.

Q: Are the graduation application and ceremony attendance RSVP the same thing?

  • A: No, if you plan on participating the graduation ceremony as a graduate, you must submit a graduation application and the RSVP.

Q: Since I did not meet my degree/certificate requirements on the first attempt, I am reapplying for the same degree or certificate. What do I need to do?

  • A: Submit a new graduation application. There is no need to repay the $20 application fee or retake the graduation survey for a repeat attempt at the same degree or certificate within SCF.

Q: When will I receive my diploma?

  • A: Diplomas and certificates will be mailed within eight weeks after graduation. 

Q: How do I order a transcript? 

  • A: If you need your transcript immediately after graduation, please order it here at this time. You will need to mark the transcript as "Hold for Degree," which will move you up in the final review list and your transcript will be sent quickly.

Q: What if I move or need to change my diploma mailing address on my graduation application?

  • A: You must complete a change of address form and email  If you fail to update this address with SCF and the graduation email prior to the mailing of the diplomas, you will need to pay the $15 nonrefundable duplicate diploma fee. Diplomas are mailed within eight weeks after graduation, but may be mailed sooner without notification. Any student who has a financial or disciplinary hold will not be sent the diploma until the hold is cleared.
