Financial Aid

CHAPTER 35

Dependents/Survivors Educational Assistance

An application form 22-5490 must be completed and submitted with a certified copy of the student's birth certificate or, for a spouse, a certified copy of a marriage certificate.  Please note: The Veteran's file number must be included in order for the VA to process form 22-5490. We recommend a social security number be included.

This program provides educational benefits for:

  1. Sons, daughters, and spouses of veterans who are deceased due to military service or are 100 percent permanently and totally disabled as a result of a service-connected disability
  2. Sons, daughters, and spouses of service persons missing in action, captured or forcibly detained, or interned in the line of duty by a foreign power for more than 90 days

Spouses of the above mentioned veterans must use their benefits within 10 years from the latter of:

  1. the veteran's death, or
  2. the date the veteran's disability was established.

Eligibility for dependents begins on the 18th birthday or completion of secondary education, if before 18. The ending date is the 26th birthday, but not beyond the 31st birthday. An application form 22-5490 must be completed and submitted along with an original or certified copy of the student's birth certificate or if a spouse, an original copy or certified copy of a marriage certificate. These original and certified copies will be examined for authenticity, photo copied, and returned to the student. Please note:  Either the veteran's file number and/or social security number must be included on the form 22-5490 or the VA will not be able to process the application.  If the file number or social security are not known, an excellent source for the social security number is the local congressman's office whose name, address, and phone numbers are listed in the front of the local telephone directory.  Related forms may be found here.
