Post-9/11 GI Bill - Chapter 33

Important Information

For those individuals currently eligible for, or receiving, another educational benefit, be sure to weigh all options prior to making a change to Chapter 33.  Please be certain you wish to elect this particular chapter of VA educational benefits as, once the election is made, it is irrevocable.

Items to Consider

  • For those currently receiving the Montgomery GI Bill - Active Duty (Chapter 30) educational benefits, and are close to exhausting your benefits, it may be in your best interest to exhaust all of your MGIB-AD entitlement prior to electing Chapter 33 benefits.  In this instance, you may be entitled to an additional 12 months of entitlement under the Post-9/11 GI Bill (if you meet the criteria).
  • Do you plan to attend college at half-time enrollment or less?  Your Rate of Pursuit must be greater than 50% under Chapter 33 in order to receive the monthly housing allowance.
  • Do you plan to take all of your courses online (i.e., distance learning)?  If so, did you know you will not be eligible for the monthly housing allowance?
