January 2015

FREE Yoga Plus classes – Mondays beginning January 12th from 5:00pm to 6:00pm in the SCF Library, second floor. This class incorporates a variety of the more popular types of yoga plus some Pilates movements – worth 50 wellpoints for each class (maximum of 300 wellpoints for yoga classes can be earned per semester).

FREE Self Defense classes – Tuesdays beginning January 20th, presented by Ancient Ways Martial Arts from 12:30pm to 1:30pm in the Gym (building 17) – worth 50 wellpoints for each class (maximum of 300 wellpoints for self-defense classes can be earned per semester).

FREE Zumba Fitness classes – Tuesdays beginning January 12th from 5:00pm to 6:00pm in the SCF Collegiate School (building 19) – worth 50 wellpoints (maximum of 300 wellpoints for Zumba classes can be earned per semester).

FREE Yoga Flow classes – Wednesdays beginning January 12th from 5:00pm to 6:00pm in the SCF Collegiate School (building 19). This class will begin with a breathing mediation to quiet the mind and tune into the body. Each class will be themed such as opening the heart, opening the hips, cleansing the nervous system, detoxifying organs. Set to music, you will flow slowly through classic yoga postures and variations and modifications will be given for all levels. Bring a mat, two blocks, and your smile – worth 50 wellpoints for each class (maximum of 300 wellpoints for yoga classes can be earned per semester).

Thursday, January 22nd – SCF Music Student Showcase. Concert begins at 8:00pm in the Neel Performing Arts Center (bldg.11). Student artist representatives will perform a variety of musical works in a benefit concert on behalf of SCF music student activities. General admission $10, donations accepted – worth 50 wellpoints (must attach ticket stub to receive wellpoints).

Wednesday, January 28th & Thursday, January 29th – Blood Drive from 10:00am to 3:00pm, Suncoast Communities Blood Mobile will be in the “Loop” between the Family Heritage House (bldg. 8) and the Neel Performing Art Center (bldg. 11) – worth 50 wellpoints for a successful donation (extra wellpoints available for a double donation). You may also obtain wellpoints for any documented donation given off campus.

Thursday, January 29th – HIV-STD-Hepatitis A, B, C Testing, presented by the Manatee County Health Department from 10:00am to 3:00pm on the service road located between the Student Union (bldg. 14) and the SCF Gym (bldg.17) – worth 25 wellpoints (maximum of 25 wellpoints can be earned per semester).

Thursday, January 29th – “Transfer 101,” presented by SCF Advising Center staff from 1:00pm to 2:00pm in building 1-207. Do you see a Bachelor’s degree in your future? Your best strategy is to plan ahead. Come to this workshop and learn about transferring to a college or university. We will give you a timeline to follow including choosing a major, determining prerequisites, applying to the university and so much more. You don’t want to miss this opportunity – worth 50 wellpoints.

Thursday, February 12th – U.S Army Woodwind Quintet Concert. Concert begins at 8:00pm in the Neel Performing Arts Center (bldg.11). Founded in 1996, The U.S. Army Band Woodwind Quintet is one of the Army’s premiere chamber ensembles that entertains, educates and inspires. Admission is FREE – worth 50 wellpoints (must attach ticket stub to receive wellpoints).

Tuesday, February 17th – “Factoring Made Fun,” presented by SCF Academic Resource Center staff from 12:00pm to 1:00pm in Building 5-122. Don’t believe that factoring can be fun? Attend this workshop and learn how to factor and how to make it fun – worth 50 wellpoints.

Tuesday, February 24th – “Resume Power Hour,” presented by SCF Career Resource Center staff from 3:00pm to 4:00pm in Building 1-207. Learn how to easily and quickly develop a resume to get the attention of employers, transfer schools, and scholarship committees – worth 50 wellpoints.

Sunday, March 1st – Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana.” Concert begins at 2:00pm in the Neel Performing Arts Center (bldg.11). The SCF Choirs and Orchestra combine forces to present one of the monumental musical works of the 20th century. Featuring poetry that celebrates life’s pleasures, music with earth-shaking visceral choruses, thundering percussion, and blazing brass all packing a massive punch together to make composer Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana one of the most exhilarating musical experiences for performer and audience alike. Part of the SCF Foundation Sundays at the Neel Series. General Admission $30, students and SCF employees $15 – worth 50 wellpoints (must attach ticket stub to receive wellpoints).

Monday, March 30th – “CAPP to Cap: How to Read Your Degree Audit,” presented by SCF Advising Center staff from 3:00pm to 4:00pm in building 1-207. During this workshop, SCF advisors will teach students how to plan and track toward degree completion by using online resources. Advisors will introduce the CAPP degree audit and demonstrate access through the SCF Connect portal. They will also help you to identify your intended degree, search for additional options through the “what if analysis” function, understand what courses have satisfied degree requirements and what courses are needed to complete/graduate with the selected degree – worth 50 wellpoints.

Tuesday, March 31st – Guest Artist, Rebecca Penneys, Piano and SCF Faculty Fred Gratta, Cello. Concert begins at 8:00pm in the Neel Performing Arts Center (bldg.11). Rebecca Penneys has been a Steinway artist since 2003, professor at Eastman School of Music, artist-in-residence at St. Petersburg College, and a resident artist at the Chautaqua Festival since 1978. She has also has hosted the Rebecca Penneys Piano Festival 2013 and 2014 at University of South Florida. Fred Gratta, principal cellist for the St. Petersburg Opera Company, Tampa Bay Symphony and member of the Florida Orchestra since 1994, is an adjunct professor at Eckerd College and SCF. Join the SCF Brass Choir, Woodwind Choir, String Quartet, and Percussion Ensemble as we invite you on the stage to sit up close and personal with us as we play some of our favorite chamber music selections. Thursday, April 9th – Guest Artists O Som Do Jazz featuring SCF Faculty Marc Mannino, Jazz Guitar. Concert begins at 8:00pm in the Neel Performing Arts Center (bldg.11). SCF faculty Marc Mannino, jazz guitarist, and guest artists O Som Do Jazz featuring Rio de Janeiro singer Andrea Moraes Manson, will entertain you with an evening of jazz favorites along with Brazilian Bossa Nova and samba-jazz. Thursday, April 16th – Faculty Recital, Rex Willis, Composer “Disorderly Music in a World of Chaos!” Concert begins at 8:00pm in the Neel Performing Arts Center (bldg.11). SCF faculty member and composition professor Rex Willis presents traditional original compositions as well as experimental music. Come, be a part of it! Monday, April 20th – SCF Music Theatre Showcase. Concert begins at 8:00pm in the Neel Performing Arts Center (bldg.11). This showcase included exciting and moving scenes from the Broadway lexicon performed by members of the Music Theatre Ensemble. Thursday, April 30th – Spring Fling Concert “Viva Florida! Concert begins at 7:00pm in the SCF Bradenton Performance Pavilion. The annual outdoor Spring Fling concert featuring all music ensembles will celebrate the unique character of Florida along with a year of musical accomplishments at SCF. General admission $8, students and SCF employees $4 – worth 50 wellpoints (must attach ticket stub to receive wellpoints).
