The Advising Center is an essential key to the success of each student. Therefore, career, academic, and personal-social advising services are provided by the Student Services Division on both campuses.
Student development advisors provide comprehensive advising services, including life, career and educational planning, interpretation of assessments, strategies to address academic difficulties, programs to develop student success skills, and preparation for university transfer and work-force readiness.
The purpose of the Advising Center at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) is to direct students toward exploring and achieving their educational, career and life goals. To accomplish this mission, student development advisors assist students in exploring career interests, values and goals to ensure meaningful course selection and educational program planning. SCF is fully committed to the belief that a fundamental component to successful academic advisement is an ongoing advisor-advisee relationship wherein students participate actively in the decision-making process and advisors serve as facilitators.
The College recommends that students planning to obtain the associate in arts degree meet with a student development advisor each term to ensure proper course selection. Further, students planning to transfer to a four-year college should check with the transfer institution to determine specific admissions/degree requirements as they prepare for a particular major. It is important for students planning to transfer to make plans early to ensure a smooth transition into the university program.
Students enrolled in associate in science or associate in applied science degree programs are also referred to the appropriate program manager for program planning.
New student orientation constitutes the first advisement, and is available in small groups during the day and evening.
For the quick prescription for an advising need, students may visit with a peer student assistant on a walk-in basis.
Educational planning, career advising and social-personal advising are available by appointment as well.
