SCF Announces New Special Assistant to the President

(Bradenton, Fla., October 10, 2014) — Brian Thomas has been named special assistant to the president for constituent and government relations at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF). He assumed his position Oct. 6.

Thomas, a retired U.S. Army Sergeant Major, has more than 20 years of experience in public and media relations, internal communication, crisis communication and strategic planning.

As the senior advisor to the director of communications for the U.S. Special Operations Command at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Thomas developed an integrated communications plan to support the senior leader campaign, advised staff members on external media plans and internal communications, and managed the production of the command’s employee publication, which was recognized as the best publication in Defense Media Activity in 2013.

His prior experience includes serving as the senior advisor to the director of public affairs for the U.S. Third Army in Atlanta and first sergeant for the 22nd Mobile Public Affairs Detachment in Fort Bragg, N.C., leading a 20-soldier team of journalists to earn a Meritorious Unit Citation for coverage of military operations in Iraq. He also worked as a lead media interaction trainer and directed media relations in Kosovo and the Middle East.

He is a three-time winner of the Bronze Star Medal and member of the Tampa chapter of the Public Relations Society of America.

He has a Bachelor of Liberal Studies from the University of South Dakota and Master of Science in International Relations from Troy University in Alabama.
