SCF Students Selected for UF Summer Enrichment Program

(Bradenton, Fla., April 11, 2019)The prestigious Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) invited two students from the State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) to participate in a six-week enrichment program at the University of Florida.

Ana Beltran-Heredia and Yesica Lopez will take part in career- and skills-development workshops facilitated by the College of Medicine, College of Dentistry, College of Pharmacy and others. SHPEP initiatives improve access to information and resources for underrepresented students interested in the health professions.

Both students are part of SCF’s Tampa Bay Bridge to Baccalaureate (TB-B2B) program. Part of a federal grant, the TB-B2B program offers support and services for underrepresented minority students as they pursue a baccalaureate degree in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) fields.

“Enabling students to get undergraduate research experience is one focus of the B2B program,” said Dr. Katy Wallis, student success coordinator for the program. “Even when opportunities seem out of reach, we encourage students to aim high. Ana and Yesica are examples of the great things happening with B2B students.”
