SCF Winter 2013 Commencement to be Held Dec. 16

(Bradenton, Fla., December 2, 2013) — State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) Winter 2013 commencement will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, at the Bradenton Area Convention Center, 1 Haben Blvd., Palmetto.

Out of 906 students who are eligible for graduation, 255 graduates are expected to participate in the ceremony. In addition to associate degree graduates, this number includes 37 baccalaureate graduates.

The graduation speaker will be SCF alumna Linda Larsen, an international award-winning speaker, author and former professional actress. Larsen graduated in 1982 from SCF, then Manatee Community College, and later earned a Bachelor of Science in Social Work, Master of Fine Arts in Professional Actor Training, and the Certified Speaking Professional designation, which is the highest earned certification in the speaking industry.

Larsen, a Sarasota resident, is the author of two books, six video programs and two audio programs, including the best-selling “12 Secrets to High Self-Esteem.” She has spoken at more than 1,000 events worldwide for groups such as the American Heart Association, eBay Europe, Jaguar Cars and Chevron.

Larsen also served as a guest adjunct faculty member for two Florida State University graduate programs and Stetson Law School, and created a Florida State Bar Association Continuing Legal Education-approved workshop for trial lawyers that she has presented for more than 10 years.

The Outstanding Graduate Award will be presented to an associate-level student and a baccalaureate-level student who have shown superior leadership, academic achievement and community service while attending SCF.

Finalists for the Outstanding Baccalaureate Graduate Award are Andrew Blix, Sarasota; Angela Ford, Bradenton; Shirley Parrado, Bradenton; and Jason Patry, Venice.

Funding for SCF's Outstanding Graduate Award is provided by the State College of Florida Foundation Inc.

Program participants will include SCF President Dr. Carol F. Probstfeld; Dr. Donald Bowman, vice president of student affairs; Gary Russell, vice president of academic affairs; Dr. Joni Pirnot, professor, mathematics; Kristen Zaborski, instructor, business and technology; Rev. Eric Cooter and Rev. Bryan O’Carroll, campus ministries; and Carl Prinner, SCF Venice Student Government Association president.

The national anthem will be sung by the SCF Chamber Choir directed by Melodie Dickerson, SCF Music Program director, and the processional and recessional will be performed by the SCF Symphony Orchestra conducted by Robyn Bell, SCF director of instrumental studies.

Peg Beck, executive director of human resources, will serve as the macebearer in the ceremony.
