Patrick Odell, Jason Patry Named SCF Outstanding Graduates

Winter 2013 Commencement Held Dec. 16

(Bradenton, Fla., December 16, 2013) — State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) Winter 2013 commencement was held at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, at the Bradenton Area Convention Center, 1 Haben Blvd., Palmetto.

Of the 906 associate and baccalaureate degree students who were eligible for graduation, 218 associate graduates and 37 baccalaureate graduates were expected to participate in the ceremony.

The Outstanding Graduate Award was presented to an associate-level student and a baccalaureate-level student who have shown superior leadership, academic achievement and community service while attending SCF.

Sarasota resident Patrick Odellwas the recipient of the Outstanding Associate Graduate Award. Odell overcame drug and alcohol addiction to achieve his dream of a college education. He serves as a recovery helpline volunteer, a group leader at 360 Church, and a mentor, recovery meeting chair, driver and case manager for the Salvation Army. At SCF, he was a member of the Nu Zeta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Odell received the Genevieve and Grainger Husted Scholarship through the SCF Foundation Inc. and the Selby Achievement Scholarship. Odell is pursuing a bachelor's degree in psychology at the University of South Florida and plans to earn a master's degree in mental health care.

Other finalists for the Outstanding Associate Graduate Award were Bethany Garriott, Sarasota; Christina Hladky, Venice; Sean Palmieri, Sarasota; Philann Prendergast, Port Charlotte; and Carl Prinner, North Port.

Venice resident Jason Patry was the recipient of the Outstanding Baccalaureate Graduate Award. While at SCF, Patry assisted with the STEMSmart Summit, received the 2012 Excellence in Energy Technology Management (ETM) Award, served on the ETM advisory board, worked as a lab assistant, and promoted the program to local officials, middle and high school students, and community organizations. He was a tutor in the Academic Resource Center, member of Alpha Mu Upsilon chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, and volunteer and fundraiser for the Lymphoma and Leukemia Society. After graduating with a B.A.S. in Energy Technology Management, he plans to pursue a career in the alternative energy field.

Other finalists for the Outstanding Baccalaureate Graduate Award were Andrew Blix, Sarasota; Angela Ford, Bradenton; and Shirley Parrado, Bradenton.

Funding for SCF's Outstanding Graduate Award was provided by the SCF Foundation Inc.

The graduation speaker was SCF alumna Linda Larsen, an international award-winning speaker, author and former professional actress. Larsen graduated in 1982 from SCF, then Manatee Community College, and later earned a Bachelor of Science in Social Work, Master of Fine Arts in Professional Actor Training, and the Certified Speaking Professional designation, which is the highest earned certification in the speaking industry.

Larsen, a Sarasota resident, is the author of two books, six video programs and two audio programs, including the best-selling "12 Secrets to High Self-Esteem." She has spoken at more than 1,000 events worldwide for groups such as the American Heart Association, eBay Europe, Jaguar Cars and Chevron.

Program participants included SCF President Dr. Carol F. Probstfeld; Dr. Donald Bowman, vice president of student affairs; Gary Russell, vice president of academic affairs; Dr. Joni Pirnot, professor, mathematics; Kristen Zaborski, instructor, business and technology; Rev. Eric Cooter and Rev. Bryan O'Carroll, campus ministries; and Carl Prinner, SCF Venice Student Government Association president.

The national anthem was sung by the SCF Chamber Choir directed by Melodie Dickerson, SCF Music Program director, and the processional and recessional were performed by the SCF Symphony Orchestra conducted by Robyn Bell, SCF director of instrumental studies.

Peg Beck, executive director of human resources, was the macebearer in the ceremony.
