SCF Teams and Student-Athletes Score Academic Honors

(Bradenton, Fla., July 1, 2014) — State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) athletic teams and student-athletes were recognized by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) for their academic achievements in 2013-2014.

SCF Manatees men's baseball and women's volleyball, softball and tennis teams were named 2013-2014 NJCAA All-Academic Teams. SCF teams exceeded the minimum team grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 required for the honor: volleyball, 3.35 GPA; softball, 3.28 GPA; tennis, 3.17 GPA; and baseball, 3.15 GPA.

Eight student-athletes were named NJCAA Athletes of Distinction and honored with awards based on their GPAs of 3.6 or higher. Kathryn Torre, volleyball, was the one SCF Manatees athlete to earn the Superior Academic Award for her 3.95 GPA.  Other SCF Manatees who won Exemplary Academic Achievement awards were: Charles Sandberg, baseball, 3.73 GPA; Courtney Covert, softball, 3.7 GPA; Cory Reid, baseball, 3.68 GPA; Jaice Metherall, softball, 3.64 GPA; Kelly Rossip, volleyball, 3.61 GPA; Ericka Shick, softball, 3.6 GPA; and Sean Trent, baseball, 3.6 GPA. 

NJCAA is the second-largest national intercollegiate athletic organization in the United States with more than 500 member schools in 43 states. Each year more than 60,000 student-athletes compete in one of 28 different sports and the organization sponsors 48 national championship events.
