SCF Biotechnology Program Partners with World Precision Instruments Inc.
(Bradenton, Fla., December 19, 2014) — State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) Biotechnology Program’s newest
partner is Sarasota-based World Precision Instruments Inc. (WPI).
In support of SCF, WPI plans to donate lab glass to the Biotechnology Program, provide
internships to SCF students, and offer guidance to SCF Biotechnology Program Director
Dr. Matt Thomas to enhance students’ experiences in the classroom and the workforce.
"We are excited that WPI has joined the Associate in Science in Biotechnology Advisory
Group. Input from a well-established local company with an international reach is
valuable to our program and our students will benefit from the opportunities that
WPI provides," Thomas said.
Founded in 1967, WPI began as a small manufacturer of amplifiers and stimulators that
are used in nerve, skin and muscle research. The company is now a leading global provider
of powerful, cutting-edge laboratory solutions for the life sciences. Headquartered
in Sarasota, its mission is to offer the broadest range of instruments and tools that
enable professionals throughout the biomedical community to conduct thorough, efficient
and accurate research.
“It was natural for WPI, as a provider of tools used for the study of life sciences,
to explore a partnership with SCF’s local Biotechnology Program,” said Larry Burns,
customer relations for WPI. “We were impressed with Dr. Thomas’ ability to sell the
program to biotechnology companies in the area and spark his students’ interest in
the field. He brings both the broad perspective and the technical knowledge to provide
students with the skills they need to immediately contribute to the biotechnology
industry.”
SCF’s biotechnology students learn laboratory skills and are trained in advanced molecular
biology techniques used in both research and industrial environments. Designed to
prepare students for employment as technicians in laboratories and industrial settings,
SCF’s program meets local, statewide and national workforce needs by partnering with
area biotechnology companies and providing highly qualified employees. The program
provides another career choice for students interested in science, nursing or other
health-care fields.
