SCF Hosts STEMsmart Summit and Medical Simulation Experience

(Bradenton, Fla., March 22, 2014) — Nearly 250 middle and high school students participated in the STEMsmart Summit and the Medical Simulation Experience hosted by State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) on Saturday, March 22, at SCF Venice and SCF Lakewood Ranch.

The daylong event was part of Gulf Coast Community Foundation's STEMsmart initiative, a partnership with Sarasota and Charlotte counties' school districts to boost student achievement and opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM.

The event included hands-on activities for students led by SCF professors, Mote Marine Laboratory biologists and representatives from Sarasota Bay Watch, Eco Reef Corals and Spiral Enterprises. The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office also was a partner.

Students had the opportunity to participate in marine science experiments, gather and process evidence for a mock crime scene, solve a medical mystery, and more. The event was free to students through the funding of Gulf Coast and support from SCF.
