SCF Athletes Honored for National and State Academic Achievement

(Bradenton, Fla., July 1, 2015) – State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) student-athletes and athletic teams were recognized by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) for their academic achievements in 2014-2015.

Five students were named NJCAA Athletes of Distinction based on their Grade Point Averages of 3.80 or higher.

Leah Lieb, volleyball, earned the Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence for her 4.0 GPA.

Recipients of the Superior Academic Achievement Award were Melinda Geisel, softball, 3.91; Susanna Peonia, volleyball, 3.8; Miranda Talbert, tennis, 3.9; and Jennifer Trotter, softball, 3.85.

Four SCF athletic teams received honorable mentions as Academic Teams of the year for their cumulative GPAs: Softball, 3.27; Volleyball, 3.27; Baseball, 3.21; and Tennis, 3.13.

The national awards are in addition to state accolades earned by SCF student-athletes.

Florida College System Activities Association All-Academic honors went to 29 SCF student-athletes who earned a GPA of 3.30 or higher, and Suncoast Conference All-Academic honors went to 41 student-athletes who earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

SCF Athletic Director Matt Ennis conveyed the College’s pride in these academic achievements: “The SCF community commends these students for their commitment to excellence in sport and in the classroom. They embody the term student-athlete.” 

NJCAA is the second-largest national intercollegiate athletic organization in the United States with more than 500 member schools in 43 states. Each year more than 60,000 student-athletes compete in one of 28 different sports and the organization sponsors 48 national championship events.
