(Bradenton, Fla., July 2, 2015) – State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) business students in Phi Beta Lambda-Gamma Beta Upsilon excelled at the Phi Beta Lambda National Leadership Conference June 24-27 in Chicago.

Naomi Stiwich placed second in Impromptu Speaking, out of 35 students participating.

Mickie Abel represented PBL Florida at the conference, and was nominated to join “Who’s Who Among National PBL Leaders.” She also was recognized for increasing membership in PBL and making Florida PBL first in the southern region and second in the United States.

More than 1,500 students participated in the national conference, and SCF students placed in the Top 10 with their colleagues in colleges and universities from 30 states.

Louis O. Okonkwo, Florida PBL District IV Director and SCF’s PBL adviser, quoted Children’s Defense Fund founder Marian Wright Edelman in congratulating SCF’s conference participants.

“One of the measures of our success is for us to ‘Remember and help America remember that the fellowship of human beings is more important than the fellowship of race, class and gender in a democratic society’,” Okonkwo said.

“Our students exemplified this statement by Ms. Edelman by their conduct during the just-completed National Leadership Conference.”
