SCF Hosts Information Sessions for MLK Day of Service Grants

(Bradenton, Fla., Oct. 13, 2015) — State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) will sponsor its third annual community MLK Day of Service on Monday, Jan. 18, 2016, joining a nationwide effort to transform the federal holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. into a day on, not a day off.

Through funding from the Florida Legislature, SCF will provide 2016 MLK Day of Service awards to organizations in Manatee and Sarasota counties for service projects that will benefit Florida District 70. Up to $5,000 per project may be awarded.

Applications will be accepted from 9 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, through 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 16. To learn how to apply for funding, community organizations must attend an information session at SCF Bradenton, 5840 26th St. W., building 5, room 124. RSVP by contacting Rodney Jones, program manager, at or 941-752-5178. Sessions are scheduled for:

  • 6-7:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 26
  • 6-7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 28
  • 6-7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 29
  • 6-7:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 2

Schools, student clubs, neighborhoods, businesses, churches, sororities or fraternities, and other community organizations are encouraged to submit applications.

Eligible service projects will address education, health, clean energy/environmental stewardship, economic opportunity, disaster preparedness, support for veterans and military families, public safety and neighborhood issues.

Last year’s projects included book and backpack distribution to students, free meal delivery for low-income residents, park and community center revitalizations and clean-ups, and the creation of Manatee County’s first community-based STEM center.

“We are pleased that Rep. Darryl Rouson has steered a portion of the allocation to SCF again this year. SCF is proud be a part of the MLK Day of Service, an important initiative that we hope will become a strong tradition in our community,” said SCF President Carol F. Probstfeld.

MLK Day of Service activities should begin Jan. 18, and must be completed by Jan. 25. Award recipients are required to attend a celebration event in February.
