SCF Brain Bowl Fire Team Qualifies for National Tournament

(Bradenton, Fla., February 3, 2015) — State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota’s (SCF) Brain Bowl Fire Team has qualified for the National Community College Championship Tournament Feb. 27-28 in Atlanta, Ga., after winning the National Academic Quiz Tournaments Sectional Tournament at Lakewood Ranch Jan. 23-24.

SCF’s Fire Team, which included SCF students Michael Moore, Naim Chowdhury, Leon Hostetler and SCF Collegiate School student Kara Stevens, ranked the highest of 64 teams in the nation that competed in eight sectional tournaments the same weekend. SCF’s Earth, Water and Air teams also participated in the local sectional tournament.

Students also performed well in individual competitions. SCF student Moore, who leads the SCF team as a consistent top scorer in Brain Bowl tournaments, ranked third. Chowdhury ranked seventh; Alex Koutelias ranked eighth; and Hostetler ranked 12th

Other players included SCF students Austin Goode, Adriana Souza, Colton Kunzeman, Jonathan Willman, Matthew Willman, Chris Medrano, Michael Freedman, Jordan McKenrick and Sebastian Ospina.

SCFCS students Carlyle Styer, Quentin Ferring and Olivia D’Oronio also participated.

Christina Dwyer, SCF assistant professor, mathematics, and Hyun Kim, assistant professor, art, design, humanities, are the teams’ coaches.
