SCF Brain Bowl Phoenix Team Qualifies for National Tournament

(Bradenton, Fla., Feb. 2, 2016) – State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) Brain Bowl Phoenix Team has qualified for the National Community College Championship Tournament Feb. 26-27 in Atlanta, Ga., after competing at the National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT) Sectional Tournament Jan. 22-23 at SCF.  NAQT organizes the premier community college and college national quiz bowl championships in the country.

SCF’s Phoenix Team, which included SCF students Michael Freedman (captain), Austin Goode, Haley Miller and David Espinal, won 10 out of 10 rounds. SCF’s Dragon Team, which included SCF students Quentin Ferring (captain), Antonio Herrera and Damien Bobrek, also participated in the local sectional tournament.

Students also performed well in individual competitions. Goode, who competed with the 2015 SCF National Champion Fire Team, ranked second. Freedman ranked third; Bobrek ranked fourth; Ferring ranked 12th; Miller ranked 21st; Espinal ranked 28th; and Herrera ranked 41st.

SCF students Paul Foerster, Michael Moore and Ariel Watsky with SCF alumnus Paul Cajka were readers and scorekeepers for the event. SCF alumnus Naim Chowdhury participated as a reader and brought New College students Yonathan Stone, Leo Lo, Ari Plymale and Conor Welch to assist. Dr. Carol F. Probstfeld, SCF President, was in attendance. “The students really appreciate the consistent support given by Dr. Probstfeld,” said Christina Dwyer, Brain Bowl Coach and assistant math professor. Dwyer and Michael Moore, 2015 Fire Team captain, are the teams’ coaches.

The teams will play again in the regional tournament Feb. 13 at South Florida State College in Avon Park.
