Music Students Excel at 2016 Music Symposium

(Bradenton, Fla., March 1, 2016) — State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota’s (SCF) music students displayed excellence at the recent Florida State College Activities Association (FSCAA) Music Symposium held at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. Forty music students were chosen to represent the SCF Music Program in the three-day event, which featured an artistic competition, master classes and ensemble performances.

SCF musicians were recognized as first-place winners in three artistic categories: Camden McLean, voice; Alex Gater, classical guitar; and Isaac Mingus, strings. Each student performed in the winners’ recital and are the recipients of a $2000 scholarship to attend any Florida university as a music major.  Shelton Brown also was recognized with an Honorable mention in the Jazz category.

SCF music students also placed in top chair positions in several instrumental ensembles. SCF Guitar/Theory professor Rex Willis served as the conductor for the Guitar Ensemble.

SCF’s Music Program has enjoyed great success and is widely regarded for its professional community partnerships with its ensembles: Concert and Chamber Choirs, Music Theatre Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Band, Jazz Combo and Guitar Ensemble. Students who wish to be a part of the 2016-17 Music Program are encouraged to attend the annual Scholarship Auditions at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 23 at SCF Bradenton, Neel Performing Arts Center, Building 11 East, off 60th Avenue West between 26th and 34th streets, accessible from parking lot H.
