SCF Brain Bowl Team Places Second in National Tournament

State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) congratulates SCF Brain Bowl team Phoenix for its second-place finish at the National Association of Quiz Tournament’s Community College Championship Tournament. That win qualifies the team to compete in the Intercollegiate Championship Tournament in Chicago in April.

The Phoenix team members are captain Michael Freedman, Austin Goode, Haley Miller and David Espinal. The team tied Chipola College’s record before defeating Chipola in the semifinals. The team went on to face Jefferson College of Kansas in the finals. The competition was held in Atlanta in February.

The team is likely to face some four-year universities at the National Academic Quiz Tournament’s Intercollegiate Championship April 9 at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare. Teams from Harvard, Notre Dame, Brown and Duke have qualified for the tournament. Last year, SCF’s team Fire defeated highly seeded UC Berkeley in the preliminary rounds of this competition.

The Phoenix team with Freedman, Miller Espinal and Paul Foerster also has qualified to compete at this year’s FCSAA Brain Bowl State Tournament April 14-16 at the Spring Hill campus of Pasco-Hernando State College by winning the regional championship in February.

Christina Dwyer, SCF’s Brain Bowl Coach and an assistant math professor, said faculty from across SCF’s campuses helped make the team successful.

“This was supposed to be a rebuilding year for us since most of the team was fairly new to quiz bowl, but the students have worked very hard to quickly raise their level of play beyond what seemed possible,” Dwyer said. “They could not have done that without the strong foundation provided in their coursework.”
