Photography Student Gains a Picture Perfect Future

(Bradenton, Fla., May 31, 2016) — State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) photography student Kimberly Jane Boldin is rubbing elbows with music moguls and rock and roll band members after getting her photography degree at SCF. In fact, Boldin got a job shooting photos of rock band Chevelle while sitting at graduation.

Chevelle, with more than six albums and soundtracks featured on video games, has hired Boldin to shoot its Florida concerts, as well as its product line. For Boldin it’s the culmination of everything she has worked for. And she’s not stopping here.

Boldin grew up with an appreciation for photography. Both her grandfather and her mother worked behind a camera. But she was busy planning her wedding in high school and wasn’t thinking about a future beyond marriage and children. It took her neary 20 years to enroll in college to earn a degree in photography – several years after she gave up her car to purchase all of the photo equipment she needed. She was 39 when she enrolled at SCF in the summer of 2012 and got her Associate in Arts in 2014. She then enrolled in the photography program and received her Associate in Science in photography in May.

Boldin said SCF helped her build her self-confidence. Starting school was “nerve-wracking,” she said. “It was all new territory. I anticipated huge classes and picked them carefully to ease in. Every semester I brought home As. I needed to do well to feel better about myself. I needed self-respect and self-confidence.” Her transformation went beyond education, she said. “It was mental, emotional and physical,” (she lost 100 pounds as a student).

She used to sneak her camera into concerts and dreamed one day of working in the music industry. As part of her degree at SCF, she was required to complete a photo internship to graduate. She had a couple of internship offers, but put them off to pursue possibilities with radio stations. Doing that meant she almost didn’t graduate with her class, but at the last minute she convinced iHeart Media to let her shoot a pre-show event for 98RockFest. She also got photo passes to take pictures at the concert.

On her assignment, she took photos of five bands and shared her favorite photos with each of the bands. After sharing her photos on Chevelle’s Facebook page, she got a friend request from Tony Chevelle, the band’s chief technology officer. During graduation he messaged her to tell her that in honor of her graduation she would be featured as the “fan of the day” on their Facebook page. He also told her the band wanted to hire her to shoot photos of their next video and of their product line.

She is flying to Chicago to shoot the video and products. In the meantime, she has already had another assignment with iHeart Media. She is also applying to the University of Central Florida to pursue a degree in event planning. She plans to combine her talents to plan music and concert events and will continue shooting photos, she said.
