SCF, Manatee-Sarasota Pilot Program Designed to Help Veterans Build Peer Community

(Bradenton, Fla., June 30, 2016) — In an effort to connect veterans enrolled at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota, the college will offer veterans only classes beginning in Fall 2016.

SCF Veteran Services is piloting a program by offering a Written Communications 1 class (ENC 1101) exclusively to veterans who may feel more comfortable sharing experiences in the class. If the program is successful the college will eventually offer three peer classes: English, Intermediate Algebra (MAT 1033) and Fundamentals of Speech Communications (SPC 1608).

The classes are designed to help the veterans build a peer network within the SCF community. By offering the classes in these gateway courses, veterans will have a chance to meet, discuss their experiences and embark on their college careers in a supportive environment.

The program starts in the Fall with classes offered 12:30-1:50 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at SCF Venice. Anyone interested in registering for the class must get a permit from SCF Veteran Services. For information, call 941-408-1446.
