SCF, Manatee-Sarasota to Host State Volleyball Tournament

(Bradenton, Fla., July 5, 2016) — State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) and The Bradenton Area Sports Commission have won a competitive bid to host the Region 8 National Junior College Athletic Association volleyball tournament over the next three years. During the first weekend of November, the top eight teams in the Florida College System Activities Association will compete for the state championship at the Bradenton-Area Convention Center in Palmetto, as well as vie for a berth in the national tournament.

By bringing the tournament to the area, SCF and The Bradenton Sports Commission are helping to expand the sports industry in the area. Manatee and Sarasota counties have attracted world-class rowing events, soccer tournaments, polo competitions, and can boast some of the best teams in the state, including SCF baseball, tennis and volleyball. The competitions are an economic engine, filling local hotel rooms, boosting restaurant sales and getting visitors into area shops.

Athletic Directors from across the state reviewed the applications to host the tournament and chose the partnership. Last year the state tournament was held in Pensacola, where Hillsborough Community College took the championship.

The tournament will kick off with a banquet at the convention center the night before tournament play begins. Games will start Friday, Nov. 4; eliminations will take place Nov. 5 and the championship game will be played Nov. 6. The tournament is open to the public and information about ticket sales will be available closer to the tournament.

Sponsorships are available for the tournament, which is expected to attract audiences from across the state. SCF is also looking for volunteers to help with the tournament and to serve as hosts for this community-wide event.
