SCF, Manatee-Sarasota Breaks Ground for Library and Learning Center

(Bradenton, Fla., Oct. 3, 2016) — State and local dignitaries joinedState College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) administration, faculty, students and staff for a groundbreaking for the College’s state-of-the-art Library and Learning Center.

Monday morning’s program featured an array of speakers including Rick Hager, Chairman of SCF Board of Trustees; Cathy Kuhlman, Board Chair for the State College of Florida Foundation; Juliana Arias, Student Government Association vice president; Meg Hawkins, directory of library services; Ted Williamson, president Williamson Dacar Architects; Rick Lentz, executive vice president Cutler Associates, General Contractor; State Rep. Jim Boyd and State Sen. Bill Galvano.

SCF President Dr. Carol Probstfeld offered the final remarks before a reception at SCF’s Neel Performing Arts Center. “Our new Library & Learning Center provides our students with the technology-driven, collaborative learning environment that mirrors private industry practices and provides us with an adaptable platform that can respond to the workforce needs of the future,” Dr. Probstfeld said. She also thanked the legislative delegation and donors for making the Library & Learning Center a reality.

More than 60 people attended the groundbreaking, including Lori Moran, an SCF Board member; Dr. Sarah Pappas, former SCF president; State Rep. Julio Gonzalez: SCF Foundation board members Jodi Allen, Michael Fuller, Chris Romine, Lisa Bristow, Victoria Stultz and Pam Swain; Susie Bowie, executive director of the Manatee Community Foundation; and Cassandra Holmes, executive director of the SCF Foundation.

The 64,000-square-foot library will be under construction through 2017 with an expected completion date of January 2018. The Florida Legislature approved the project and set aside $17.68 million for building this important community resource. The SCF Library & Learning Center’s features are designed to bring business leaders, students, faculty and our community together to develop curriculum and communicate workforce needs. The Library & Learning Center will feature a one-stop student service center, technology maker spaces, meeting rooms, archive rooms, a film production studio café and seminar room.
