Sundays at Neel Kick Off at SCF, Manatee-Sarasota with Jazz on Ice

(Bradenton, Fla., Nov. 29, 2016) — Jazz groups at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) will launch the 2016-17 Sundays at Neel series with Jazz on Ice – featuring music from “The Nutcracker Suite” and “Frozen” – at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, at SCF’s Neel Performing Arts Center, 5840 26th St. W.

The SCF Big Band will revisit Duke Ellington’s 1960 orchestration of Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker,” a masterpiece that placed Ellington’s stamp on the holiday season. Arranged by Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, their approach to Tchaikovsky’s ballet is a crossover between classical and jazz music. From the 2013 movie “Frozen,” the band will present recent additions to the holiday seasons made famous by Idina Menzel as the ice princess Elsa. Going from cold to hot, the SCF Jazz Combo will travel to New Orleans to perform Wynton Marsalis’ swinging arrangements of holiday carols with a Big Easy bounce.

General admission is $30; students and SCF employees $15. Sundays at Neel is a series of fundraising concerts that benefit State College of Florida Foundation scholarships. For tickets and information, contact SCF’s Neel box office at 941-752-5252 or by email at

During the construction of SCF’s new Library and Learning Center, parking for SCF’s Neel Performing Arts Center will be west of Building 11, in Parking Lot I. Entrance to the auditorium remains on the east side of the building, with a drop-off area directly to the south of the front doors.
