SCF Honors Student Employees of the Year

(Bradenton, Fla., April 25, 2017) — State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) honored its student employees of the year during ceremonies on the Bradenton and Venice campuses. The recognitions are part of National Student Employment week.

Alissa Kashdin, Disability Resource Center (DRC) in Bradenton, and Sergio Garcia, Peer Advising Center (PAC) in Venice, were named the Student Employees of the Year for going above and beyond in representing the College and helping students.

Kashdin quickly learned assistive technology and provides instruction to staff and students. She takes initiative to find the best use of technology to help students, and is resourceful, confident, positive and organized. She works with students and their parents to make sure they are more organized, communicate effectively with instructors, plan tutoring and study time, and develop effective study skills.

Garcia works as a Peer Advising Assistant, connecting with students and prospective students about the College. He encourages students to use the Career Resource Center (CRC) and to get started on their resumes right away. He went to work for the CRC to improve his office skills and within a year had moved into peer advising. He is known for his positive attitude and for sharing his knowledge of SCF and its Venice campus.

Student employee supervisors made nominations for Student Employee of the Year. All nominees had at least six months of employment and a minimum grade point average of 2.5. A review committee evaluated the students on attributes, expectations, leadership, style and impact. The nominee with the highest overall score is sent to the Southern Association of Student Employment Administrators to be judged on a regional level. The regional winner is sent to the National Association of Student Employment Administrators to be considered for a national award.

Student employment offers participants the ability to develop skills relevant in any career and to better prepare for the job market upon graduation. Many students are able to earn a significant portion of their college expenses. The student workforce also contributes to efficient operations.

Each student who was nominated for the honor received a small gift of appreciation.
