SCF to Host National Academic Quiz Tournament Sectionals

(Bradenton, Fla., Jan. 18, 2018) — State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) will host the National Academic Quiz Tournament (NAQT) Sectionals Saturday at 10 a.m. in Building 27 at SCF Bradenton, 5840 26th St. W. A dozen teams are expected to compete from six colleges. The winner of Saturday’s sectional competition will qualify to go on to the NAQT Community College Championship Tournament in Chicago March 2-3.

SCF also will host the Brain Bowl Regional Tournament Feb. 10, which qualifies teams for the State Championship Tournament March 16-17. SCF won the State Tournament in 2016 and is looking to reclaim its title in 2018.

SCF’s Brain Bowl team will compete at sectionals Saturday after going undefeated last weekend at the IMSANITY5 tournament at Santa Fe College in Gainesville. The competition included 16 teams, 12 from seven Florida colleges, including two teams each from University of Florida (UF) and University of Central Florida (UCF).  Each team played eight rounds during the tournament.  In the final round, the two undefeated teams, SCF and UF Orange, faced off for the title round in which SCF defeated UF Orange 185 - 110 to remain the only undefeated team in the tournament.

The team scored an average of 238 points per game.  Individually, returning player David Espinal ranked third overall, averaging 64 points per round, while veteran and team captain Austin Goode ranked 16th, averaging 26 points per round. Lacey Anderson, another veteran, ranked 35th scoring 60 points, while rookie Justin Reitwiesner playing in his second competition scored 10 points and ranked 49th overall.
