Guitars and Flutes Take the Stage at SCF, Manatee-Sarasota

(Bradenton, Fla., Feb. 6, 2018) — Guitars and flutes take the stage at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) for “We Tell the Story” at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 27 in the SCF Neel Performing Arts Center, 5840 26th St. W., Bradenton. The concert will feature eclectic music selections based on folktales with a performance by guest artists Theresa and Chuck Hulihan, a dynamic flute and guitar instrumental duo from Arizona. The Hulihans will be joined by SCF’s Guitar Ensemble, solo guitarist Roger Hudson and a flute quartet.

Hulihan Duo selections will cover a wide variety of styles including “Southwestern Suite” by Sy Brandon with Native American themes. Roger Hudson will play “Midnight Flight,” a guitar solo inspired by Hurricane Irma. The flute quartet will premiere SCF Guitar and Composition Studies Director Rex Willis’ “Dragon Flies.” Based on an encounter with millions of dragonflies on a West Florida beach, “the music itself seeks to create the actual buzzing, the look and feel of those millions of wings and the movement of the masses of flying insects,” said Willis.

The SCF Guitar Ensemble rounds out the program with “The Tortoise and the Hare” and “Moon Migration,” by SCF guitar instructor Jonathan Godfrey. The evening concludes with Willis’ “RetroMuse,” which has the feel of music from the ‘60s and was inspired by the number of people buying up midcentury modern furniture and clothing.

General admission tickets are $10, student and staff tickets are $5. For more information or to purchase tickets visit or call 941-752-5252.
