SCF Music Department Concludes Season with Free Outdoor Concert

(Bradenton, Fla., April 17, 2018) — The Music Department at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) will conclude its 2017-18 season with an outdoor concert featuring choral and instrumental selections at 7 p.m. April 26 at SCF’s Performance Pavilion, 5840 26th St. W., Bradenton. The concert is free and open to the public. Seating is provided. Attendees may also bring chairs or blankets, and food and non-alcoholic beverages.

The evening’s theme will be “Step Right Up, It’s Carnival Time,” with each group providing entertaining and fun carnival music. SCF’s Symphonic Band, dubbed the “Circus Band,” will play a series of circus marches between performances by SCF’s Concert and Chamber Choirs, Latin Band, Big Band, and Guitar Ensemble. One of the marches, Karl King’s “Circus Days,” has a local connection as King was John Ringling’s band leader and is part of the Circus Ring of Fame in St. Armand’s Circle.

The Guitar Ensemble will play a medley comprised of “Black Orpheus” by Luiz Bonfa and “Girl from Ipanema” by Antonio Carlos Jobim, as well as “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds” arranged by Mark Phillips. The Latin Band will perform “Mambo” from “West Side Story” and “The Chicken” by Jaco Pastorius. A special feature will be the SCF Big Band teaming up with the choirs to perform music from this year’s hit movie, “The Greatest Showman.”

“This concert is our gift to the community for their support of SCF’s music programs and students this season,” said Melodie Dickerson, director of choral studies and music program director.
