Study Abroad Program Allows SCF Students to View History

(Bradenton, Fla., July 5, 2018) — Ten students from State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) traveled to Western Europe in May to study European history as part of a study abroad summer term program at SCF. The group, led by Michael Rogers, associate professor of history and politics, visited London, Oxford, Paris, Versailles and Amsterdam.

Students visited Big Ben, Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame Cathedral, the Palace of Versailles, the Louvre and the Anne Frank House. The students were able to squeeze in a historical tour of Windsor Castle and St. George’s Chapel just days before Prince Harry wed Meghan Markle, an American actress and humanitarian. Students in the Special Topics in Western Civilization class were required to keep journals of their 10-day trip, write a paper and conduct a class presentation on what they learned.

“It was an amazing 10-day educational journey across Western Europe,” Rogers said. “Students will remember this educational experience for the rest of their lives. For most students, this was their first opportunity to study and travel outside of the United States.”

For Victoria Carroll and Rachel Hyde, this was their first time traveling to Europe. “The study abroad trip was a wonderful passage into the rich history of the European culture,” Carroll said. “The sense that we are all students in life is a definitive part of the trip’s greatness.”

“This entire trip was so much more than I can put into words,” Hyde said.

Rogers organized and led the trip in coordination with Education First College Study Tours. It included daily excursions to historic monuments and museums, and daily lectures from local experts and guides. Rogers is planning a historically significant 10-day trip to England and France for the summer of 2019. Students who participate will travel to Normandy, France, June 6, 2019, and participate in the 75th anniversary ceremonies commemorating the D-Day landings during World War II.
