SCF Faculty and Students Win Nursing Scholarships

(Bradenton, Fla., Sept. 11, 2018) — A nursing faculty member and six nursing students from State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) won scholarships last month to continue their nursing education. Dorothy Neufeld, who teaches nursing courses at SCF, won a $16,000 scholarship toward completing her doctoral degree. The student scholarships will help pay for earning their Bachelor of Science in nursing (BSN) degrees.

The SCF students who received scholarships of $2,500 each are: Amanda Ackley, Nathalie Barr, Yulia Crosley, Alina Kulakevich, Patricia Nunez and Paige Pridgen. Most of the students currently are in SCF’s RN to BSN program.

Neufeld’s $16,000 scholarship award is from the Community Foundation of Sarasota County through the Suncoast Nursing Action Coalition (SNAC) BSN and Beyond Doctorate in Nursing Scholarship Fund. The initiative was implemented to develop more local faculty with doctoral degrees to meet the ongoing nursing shortage in Manatee, Desoto, Charlotte and Sarasota counties. Neufeld plans to start work in January on her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree at Duquesne University.

The total award paid out for doctoral scholarships since the inception of the program in 2016 is $84,000 and $130,000 has been awarded to support BSN education.

The SNAC Scholarships have an annual application cycle with a March 1 deadline each year.  Scholarship application information can be found at snac4fl.org.
