Local Dentist Shares Success Story Starting With SCF

(Bradenton, Fla., Sept. 25, 2018)—The American Chemical Society student affiliate club at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) kicks off its alumni speaker series at 7 p.m. Sept. 27 at SCF Bradenton, 5840 26th St. W. in Room 106, Building 29 as Dr. Igor Bilov shares his path to becoming a dentist.

Bilov emigrated with his family to the United States just a few years after he graduated from high school. He worked several low-paying jobs as he learned English and completed paperwork to become a citizen, and as he worked to understand and adopt an entirely new culture. As soon as he and his family were on more sure footing, Bilov enrolled at SCF.

“Education was always valued in my family and greatly encouraged by my parents,” he said. “At this point I didn’t have a solid vision of who I wanted to be, but I always had a passion for science and that was a start.”

After receiving his degree from SCF, Bilov spent the summer job shadowing Dr. Hans Salheiser, a local endodontist, before he transferred to Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) where he completed his coursework to apply to a dental program. While at FGCU, he worked with Dr. Michael LaGier on a research project involving an oral pathogen. In 2012, Bilov was accepted into the inaugural class at Lake Erie College of Medicine’s (LECOM) dental school where he received his Doctor of Dental Medicine.

While at SCF, Bilov and his fiancé planned a wedding. He volunteered in the community, using his knowledge of English, Ukrainian and Russian to help others facing a language barrier. While at dental school, he participated in service projects, including Project Christmas Smile, Mission of Mercy and Day4Hope.

Bilov is a member of the American Dental Association, Florida Dental Association and is second vice president of the Sarasota County Dental Association. He hopes to inspire SCF students to set their goals high and follow their dreams. “Hard work and perseverance are your best friends,” he said. “Don’t let your skills and talents rust without use.”
