Faculty Lecture Series at SCF to Offer Tips on Cybersecurity

(Bradenton, Fla., Oct. 18, 2018) — Concerned about your computer or smartphone being hacked, or want to find out more about minimizing your exposure from a data breach? State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota’s (SCF) Faculty Lecture Series will tackle these topics and others related to cybersecurity at 2 p.m. Nov. 8 at SCF Bradenton, 5840 26th St. W., Building 27, Room 105 and via Skype at SCF Venice, 8000 S. Tamiami Trail, Building 400, Room 417. The lecture is free and open to the public.

William Culver, assistant professor, business and technology, will present the lecture on “Ten Tips for Cyber Sanity.” According to Culver, Yahoo, Facebook, Equifax, Target, JP Morgan Chase and the U.S. Office of Personnel Management all have one thing in common. They have been the victim of a major data breach, and those breaches have had significant ramifications for the public.

With so many facets of our lives and business being conducted online, how can you decrease the risk of your personal information being compromised? What should you do if you find out you are part of a data breach? Culver will present tips and best practices for reducing online risks and how to respond when cybersecurity measures fail to keep your information safe. Attendees also will have an opportunity to ask questions.
