SCF Professors Help Lead National Math Conference

(Bradenton, Fla., Jan. 29, 2019)The mathematics department at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) had a strong showing at the recent American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) conference in Orlando, Florida. The AMATYC conference is an annual national gathering of two-year college mathematics faculty. Because the conference was in Orlando last November, a majority of math faculty from SCF were able to attend and take on leadership roles.

Dennis Runde, an SCF professor who holds his doctorate from the University of South Florida, gave a presentation titled, “I Always Wanted to Be a Professional Math Teacher! … Now What?”  SCF faculty, including Runde, Kim Ghiselin, Altay Özgener, Janet Samuels and Anna Wasilewska also presided over sessions. In addition, Özgener, Runde, Joni Pirnot, and Rebecca Williams helped with conference coordination and planning as part of the Orlando local events committee.

As the recipient of the Florida Two-Year College Mathematics Association (FTYCMA) Affiliate Scholarship, SCF faculty member Robert Shollar served as the FTYCMA delegate at the AMATYC conference.

SCF volunteers, donning bright orange conference t-shirts and Mickey Mouse ears, staffed the hospitality room as well. Volunteers included Michael Bellissimo, Anna Wasilewska, Cathy Panik, Özgener, Pirnot, Runde, Shollar and Williams.
