SCF Students Win Honors at Winter Music Symposium
(Bradenton, Fla., Feb. 14, 2019) — Two students from State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) were recognized with honors during a competition at the Winter Music Symposium of Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) in January. Kevin Moroney won the ‘Male Vocal (Baritone)’ category of the competition. Luca Stine won the ‘Jazz (Trumpet)’ category. Both students will receive a $2,000 scholarship.
SCF student Emmanuel Montalvo also won an honorable mention in the ‘Jazz (Alto Saxophone)’ category, and Lyndsey Culbreath was chosen to perform for a Symposium masterclass based on her performance in the ‘Female Vocal (Soprano)’ category.
Each year, SCF selects between 40 and 50 students to perform at the Winter Music Symposium where its top students participate in the all-state band, orchestra, choir, jazz band, guitar ensemble, and piano masterclasses. In addition to these ensemble experiences, students can compete with other students from across the state in the "Student Artist Competition" for a $2,000 scholarship.
SCF is well-represented in all-state performance groups. Seven of the 17 members of the all-state string orchestra are SCF students, including first chair viola and first chair cello. Eight of the 20 members of the all-state jazz band also are SCF students, including the first, second and third chairs in trumpet. Students also placed high in the Symphonic Band including second chair trombone, second chair clarinet, and third chair French horn. Accompanying the students were music faculty members Dr. Robyn Bell, Don Bryn, Dr. Pete Carney, Melodie Dickerson and Rex Willis.
