SCF Wins SHRA Diversity Award

(Bradenton, Fla., Mar. 7, 2019)State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) was presented the Sarasota-Manatee Human Resources Association (SHRA) Diversity Award during a January 2019 SHRA meeting. The award, sponsored by SHRA and CAN Community Health, recognizes the organization that can best demonstrate its efforts to promote workplace diversity. Accepting the award on behalf of SCF was Director of Human Resources, Jennifer LaHurd.

According to SHRM, workplace diversity can be thought of as ‘the collective mixture of differences and similarities that includes for example, individual and organizational characteristics, values, beliefs, experiences, backgrounds, preferences, and behaviors.’

Among the questions and information applicants were to submit, included how its organization embraces, celebrates and includes diverse people in its workforce, hiring strategies and how to combat unconscious bias in its hiring practices.

“Diversity is embraced at SCF,” said Gloria Tracy, assistant director of Human Resources, who submitted the award application. “We focus on being the central location for education, culture and workforce development in our service region.”

SCF also has a Diversity/Multicultural Awareness committee that created a State of Diversity that reads - In an effort to strengthen our academic community and build alliances across differences, our college promotes and encourages a diverse student, faculty and staff population.

SCF is dedicated to providing a safe, positive, and nurturing environment that values and appreciates the uniqueness, similarities and differences found in the members of its community.  The strength of our diversity combined with commitment and dedication to a common purpose can only lead SCF to continued success.
