Award-Winning SCF Big Band Performs National Anthem at Tampa Bay Rays Game

(Bradenton, Fla., Sept. 24, 2019)State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota’s (SCF) Big Band made its first public appearance of the 2019-2020 school year Sunday, Sept. 8, with a live performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” prior to the Tampa Bay Rays 1:10 p.m. game at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg.

The SCF community and the public will have multiple opportunities to enjoy an SCF Jazz performance this fall. Jazz musicians will perform at “Bienvenidos to SCF Music: Spanish Heritage Month Music Celebration” Thursday, Oct. 3, 7:30 p.m., “Halloween Thriller: Concert and Costume Contest” Thursday, Oct. 31, 7:30 p.m., and “Luck Be a Lady: Jazz Goes to Vegas” Thursday, Nov. 21, 7:30 p.m. All three performances will take place at SCF’s Neel Performing Arts Center. General admission tickets are $10 for the public and $5 for SCF students, faculty and staff. 

The band is coming off a banner year in 2018-19, winning the Outstanding Performance award at the Lakeside Jazz Festival, placing eight musicians on the 20-chair all-state collegiate jazz band, sweeping the top two soloist awards at the state competition and performing live on the “All Night Jazz” radio program on WUSF NPR 89.7. SCF Jazz is directed by Pete Carney.
