Family Heritage House and SCF Celebrate 50th Anniversary of Coretta Scott King Book Awards

(Bradenton, Fla., Oct. 22, 2019)The Family Heritage House Museum at State College of Florida, Sarasota-Manatee (SCF) and the SCF Library & Learning Center have partnered with Soar in 4 to host “Finding Yourself in Stories,” a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Coretta Scott King (CSK) Book Awards. The free and open to the public event will be held at SCF Bradenton, 5840 26th St. W., Saturday, Nov. 2, 10 a.m.-noon.

The family-oriented event will feature presentations by local authors, history presented through virtual reality, music, exploration of books to have won CSK Awards and tours of the Family Heritage House Museum. The Family Heritage House Museum has acquired the complete list of CSK Book Awards author and illustrator award winners. The first 50 families in attendance will receive a free book.

The American Library Association has awarded the CSK Award to outstanding African American authors and illustrators since 1969. The award commemorates the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and honors his wife, Mrs. Coretta Scott King, for her courage and determination to continue the work for peace and world brotherhood. Winners include Toni Morrison, Maya Angelou, Walter Dean Myers, Virginia Hamilton, Jerry Pinkney and Christopher Paul Curtis.

Soar in 4 is Manatee County’s movement to ensure all 4-year-olds and their families have the opportunities and support they need for success in preschool, school and beyond. They strive to transform neighborhoods through conversations and leverage community resources to create generational change, educational success and economic stability.
