SCF Music Sponsors Virtual Masterclass with Broadway Performers

(Bradenton, Fla., Feb. 26, 2021)State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota’s (SCF) Music department sponsored a virtual masterclass on Friday, Jan. 29, featuring three Broadway performers: Mandy Gonzalez, who plays Angelica in the musical “Hamilton;” Erin Maryland, a violinist in the pit orchestra of “Hamilton;” and Nate Maryland, a trombonist in the pit orchestra of “Beetlejuice.”

The three Broadway performers engaged SCF music students in a behind-the-scenes conversation about their music education, their credentials and their pathways to Broadway. The star performers provided insight into skill sets essential to launching a successful freelance and Broadway career. They also answered students’ questions about what it was like to be backstage at “Hamilton.”

The masterclass had virtual breakout sessions, allowing for more intimate conversations between the musicians and attendees.

Dr. Robyn Bell, SCF Music program director, said that the overarching theme of the masterclass was “to take every single experience that comes your way. No matter if it pays or how far you might have to drive, take the opportunities, do your best music-making, be the type of person people want to work with and be around, and very good, high-paying music jobs will come your way.” After all, just like the title of the song from “Hamilton,” that’s what gets a musician in “The Room Where It Happens.”
