Nursing - Associate in Science Degree (AS Nursing)

The Associate in Science Degree Nursing Program (ASN) combines course work on campus with guided clinical experiences in health care agencies in both Manatee and Sarasota counties. There are two methods for completion of the program, the basic approach for students who have no previous nursing course work, and the transition approach for the Licensed Practical Nurse.

Upon successful completion of the program, the graduate is eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) to become licensed as a registered nurse. On entry into practice, the Associate in Science Degree Nursing graduate is able to use the nursing process to administer care for a group of patients in acute and chronic settings. The graduate functions effectively within the health care team and provides guidance to less skilled workers in the implementation of nursing care.

Our Associate in Science Nursing Program is approved by the Florida Board of Nursing and is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) which is located at 3343 Peachtree Road NE, Suite 850; Atlanta, GA 30326. NLNAC's phone number is 404-975-5000.

Admission Policy

Nursing programs are limited enrollment programs with a selective admission process based upon GPA and completion of program requirements, general academic requirements, and passing scores on an entrance exam. Completion of program requirements ( prerequisites) are needed to make application to the nursing program. Additional general academic requirementsare also required.

Admission priority is given to:

Qualified applicants who have completed the most hours toward the degree (prerequisite and general academic requirements) and Overall and cumulative GPA on the courses required for the degree (with highest GPA's given priority)>

As enrollment is limited, completion of all or part of the academic courses required for the degree does not guarantee acceptance into the nursing program.

To be considered for a nursing program a student must submit an application by the established deadline.  All qualified applications will be reviewed and an admission decision will be sent to the student (via student email) by the notification deadline.  Students not accepted to the program will have the opportunity to submit a new application for another admission period.  Admission policies regarding hours completed, testing, and GPA will apply.

Upon acceptance in to the program, additional background checks, fingerprinting, health screenings and CPR certification are required to meet local health care regulations. Based on the results of these checks and screenings, student may become ineligible for program admission. Students enrolled should understand that the required clinical experience in various health care facilities may expose them to environmental hazards and infectious disease including, but not limited to Tuberculosis, Hepatitis B, and HIV/AIDS.
