Green Team Hosts Guest Lecture on Ecological Restoration

(Bradenton, Fla., March 8, 2022) — The Green Team at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) Venice will host guest speaker Shane Cherry from 1-2 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, in the Bill Jervey Jr. Library, Room 307, 8000 S. Tamiami Trail, Venice. Cherry will speak about the large scale habitat and major water restoration projects he has worked on around the country. The event is free and open to the public.

Cherry holds a bachelor’s degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in earth, atmospheric and planetary science and a master’s in geography and engineering from Johns Hopkins University. He serves as a principal scientist and the technical director of sediment remediation at HydroGeoLogic, Inc. He is an expert in the physical processes that occur in rivers, floodplains, and watersheds, and develops and negotiates creative solutions to complex river and estuarine ecosystems impacted by contamination and other forms of ecological degradation.

The lecture will include stories of ecological restoration projects that highlight the important and relevant issues related to protecting and restoring the natural systems we rely on for so many essential functions. Cherry and his team work with the Environmental Protection Agency and other scientists to restore the natural environment and bring damaged ecosystems back to health.

The Green Team is a group of students, faculty and staff who work in collaboration to design and implement projects that maintain the natural beauty and environmental significance of SCF Venice.
