Sea Turtle Research In The Gulf Presented by the SCF STEM Learning Community Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2026 From 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. at SCF Bradenton, Natural Science (Bldg. 25A), Room 117 Lakewood Ranch will also be doing a viewing of the workshop in the Center for Innovation and Technology, Room 134 Join virtually: https://teams.microsoft.com/meet/274825216484756?p=vlhbrb28Pc0huj4y5O Researcher Dr. Jake LaSala from Mote Marine will be coming to talk to students about his journey into Marine Biology as well as share about his Research with Sea Turtles. The sea turtle conservation and research program (STCRP) at Mote Marine Laboratory has been monitoring the nesting beaches in Sarasota and Manatee counties since 1982. Sea turtle nesting numbers have seen record growth primarily due to conservation efforts and citizen science. STCRP tags sea turtles at night to learn more about individual behavior and how it impacts their populations. Research projects are aided by students annually and we will talk about some of the most recent projects and other STCRP projects.

Hispanic Film Screening Thursday, October 15 at 12:30 p.m. in Screening Room 325 at SCF Venice In the Heights, a musical drama film. In the Heights, directed by Jon M. Chu. Lin-Manuel Miranda created and wrote the music and lyrics for the original stage musical. Usnavi, a young bodega owner in Washington Heights, dreams of a better future while celebrating his Latino community, family, friendships, music, and culture. As he and his neighbors follow their dreams, they face important choices about love, home, and where they belong. (Limited to 40 people) Café Hispano Wednesday, October 7 from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at SCF Lakewood Ranch Tasting of coffees and teas from different Latin American countries and refreshments, along with an opportunity to listen to Oral Histories recorded by some of our SCF staff and students who have a Hispanic heritage. Culmination: Café Hispano Wednesday, October 14 from 9-11 a.m. in the Library & Learning Center – Knowledge Commons (1st floor) at SCF Bradenton Tasting of coffees and teas from different Latin American countries and refreshments, along with an opportunity to listen to Oral Histories recorded by some of our SCF staff and students who have a Hispanic Heritage. Month-long/ongoing programs: Hispanic Food: The SCF Cafeteria/Food Services will include special recipes of Hispanic food in their menus throughout the month. Books, Videos and More at the SCF Library: All three SCF Libraries will feature book displays with resources by Hispanic creators and/or about the many Hispanic and Latin American cultures represented in our Nation. Trivia and Streaming Video: The screens in the Library Forum and other public screens will showcase films, documentaries, and trivia questions related to Hispanic culture, history, and celebrities.

Haunted Manatee County Author Talk Presented by SCF Libraries and the Paranormal Society of Bradenton Meet local author Liz Reed and find out about her work with the Paranormal Society of Bradenton. Liz will be presenting stories about Manatee County history and hauntings as well as presenting her book Haunted Manatee County. Attend the event and get entered for a drawing to win a signed copy of Haunted Manatee County. The author will be for available for a meet and greet after the talk and will also have signed copies of books for sale. This event will be streaming through Microsoft Teams and can be viewed at the SCF Venice and SCF Lakewood Ranch Libraries. Free event. Author will have books for sale at the event.
