(Bradenton, Fla., June 30, 2025) — Nine State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota students in the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) – Future Health Professionals Club competed in several events at HOSA’s State Leadership Conference in Orlando. Five students, who placed first through third, have qualified to move on to HOSA’s International Leadership Conference in Nashville in June. More than 13,000 students, advisors and health care professionals from many countries are expected to attend the conference, featuring workshops, college and career exhibits, and peer networking.

SCF winners included Kezia Alivn, first place in medical spelling; Maria Molina, first place in healthy living; Jessica Carbajal, third place in health care display; Alex Diaz, third place in health career display; and Laura Zhen, third place in human growth and development and a second-time international conference competitor. 

Heather Hernandez, assistant professor and program director, SCF health services management and administration, and Patrick Patterson, director and professor, SCF radiography program, serve as the club’s advisors, supporting the students’ participation in HOSA’s regional, state and international events.

“I have found that the students in HOSA are some of the most dedicated, hard-working students, and I am continually inspired by their passion for the health professions and becoming future leaders in the health industry,” said Hernandez.  

HOSA is a student-led club that includes officer elections, meeting times, on-campus events and fundraising opportunities. HOSA provides health sciences education, hands-on skills, leadership, teamwork and networking experiences for middle school-college students interested in health-focused careers.
